I once had the 'luxury' of watching Aidan Moffat shout "Shut up you fucking cunts!" at an audience made-up partly of Mogwai's Mums and Dads at a homecoming Glasgow show a few years back. Contrary to expectations, he hasn't ended up in the gutter and instead has carved a remarkable and varied career for himself over the years. I've just seen a photo of him on the internet and he looks about 80 but his physical decline hasn't been matched by his musical output. The new single is a pleasant melancholic love song about Aidan hypothetically being left rattling around in the bottom of a ladies handbag. He now collaborates with Glasgow jazz pianist Bill Wells and has muted trumpet solos on his records. Who'd have thought it? This is excellent and perfectly timely for Valentines Day, particularly if you are sat pished in a back street Glasgow boozer on monday afternoon.
‘(If You) Keep Me In Your Heart’ is the first single to be
taken from Aidan Moffat’s upcoming album (his first long
player in over two years). Entitled ‘Everything’s Getting
Older’, the album is a collaboration with the respected
Glasgow jazz composer Bill Wells.
Thanks in no small part to the input of Wells, the single
has a much more laidback, ‘lounge’ quality than what one
would normally expect from Moffat. Comparisons are
awkward but reasonable reference points might be Elvis
Costello or Nick Cave.
The track, whilst hopefully appealing to fans of Aidan and
Bill’s respective back catalogues, could also resonate with
a wider spectrum of older music fans.
Limited to 1000 copies, the 7” vinyl comes in very special
packaging, aimed especially towards a Valentine’s Day
release date.
The single comes in a black disco bag, inserted into a
specially printed 7” size envelope alongside an exclusive
Valentine’s card with printed lyrics and a message from
Aidan and Bill.
Aidan will have two Valentine Revue Shows in February,
along with a UK tour in March supported by Malcolm
Middleton.
