La Sera by La Sera

Le Sera is a new project from Vivian Girls bass player Katy Goodman. They've been doing pretty damn good off the back of The Vivian Girls hype but take a listen to either of their previous 7" outings and it's obvious that it's totally justified. I'd go as far as to say I prefer La Sera's calculated indie pop style over The Vivian Girls scuzzier garage rock approach any day! Katy's voice is light and magical and it totally suits the 50's pop throwback stuff they choose to write. The majority of stuff here is well thought out, catchy material. Stand out tunes like debut single 'Never Come Around' and 'You're Going To Cry' just ooze pop class. The odd thing about this album is that Katy only sings on the album. All the instrumentation has been recorded by little know film director and producer Brady Hall even though Goodman is credited as the sole songwriter. This seems a little strange to me but there you go...it's like some kinda Motown thing where Brady Hall gets to be all the Funk Brothers. Anyway, other than that this is a great album full of beautifully sweet pop music. Comes as highly recommended as any of the other great albums out on Hardly Art.
