Mr. Tanaka, a Hokkaido native, runs Tanaka Heavy Industries, Ltd, a manufacturing keiretsu. He also often composes and performs music alone and with his Orquesta. The music of ‘Jet Set Siempre No. 1’ was originally only available on cassette tape, but he has now consented to allow the release on that futuristic medium, vinyl, complete with free download code. ‘Jet Set Siempre No. 1’ is part disco funk, part basement breaks, part “Point Break”, part mystery, part swirling cosmic pop … deep frozen, then defrosted in the microwave, and char-grilled on a driftwood beach barbecue at sunset. The album has two distinct personalities: Side A labelled "For Dance" and Side B "For Romance." From the opening notes of the A-side, you're immediately caught in a groove that entraps you until its end. While the B-side retains the rhythm, its added sense of enchantment ensures your moves connect with the eyes you're trying to attract. Clive Tanaka has created some of the most splendidly-rendered retro evocations / recreations ever heard, with that vintage dancefloor “Miami Vice” thing locked down to a science, evoking an image so rich you can feel the stubble, while simultaneously slamming his (leather-gloved) fist on a serotonin-releasing Glee Button, over and over and over. Vocoded softcore lyrics, crisp and judiciously-employed handclaps, solid synth-work and squealing arena guitar… there is much to love here if you’re already under the spell of other hazy tropicalistic glo-fi practicioners such as Seahawks, Lone, Kona Triangle, Solar Bears, Oriol and (of course) Tropics.
