This quirky chap is one of my favorite Welshmen of all time apart from our Ant & every stoner's demi-god Mr. Howard Marks. His songs always surprise me with their feel good effortlessness. This bugger, a definite stand-out track off his new album, is another perfect radio-shagging cracker that lodges in your mind like a half-sucked sticky sweet torpedo with moist brain-schlooping suckers attached. When he eventually does a solo best-of comp it will probably eclipse the one he & his daft mushroom-scoffing brethren put out a few years back. It'll be a true Songbook indeed. The flip is a beauty psychedelic lullaby, seemingly an improvisation on a traditional tune. It sounds like a right wonky Magic Roundabout folk-a-thon. Think of a massive peach coloured bus wobbling down Sunny lanes in Wales with loads of stoned animals & kids hanging out of the windows laughing whilst Gruff drives, rocking from side to side, leading the melody rich trail like a whacked out pied piper. Truly heartwarming & massively endearing.
· Gruff Rhys presents ‘Sensations In The Dark’, a feel-good,
mariachi-tinged ode to the joys of falling in love with
music.
· ‘The Sensations In The Dark’ single comes with a new and
exclusive B side called ‘Follow The Sunflower Trail (Theme
Tune For A National Strike)’.
· The single is taken from Gruff Rhys’ heart-warming new
album ‘Hotel Shampoo’. “I thought that as I’m getting on a
bit, the time had come to buy a suit and record an album
of piano ballads”, Gruff explains. “However, I got bored,
the record diversified and evolved – things turned out a bit
differently”. The end result is Gruff’s most ambitious, fully
realized album yet.
· Available on deluxe limited edition 12” (750 copies).
