T.C.M. - The Criminal Minds

Our album of the week (18th March 2011)

The Criminal Minds by T.C.M.

5...according to our on Thu 17 Mar, 2011.

Smart move from Rephlex issuing these recordings that have vanished into early UK hip-hop mythology. This uncompromising underground crew (originally formed in 1985) are tight, backed by dope beats, raw and tough like The Bomb Squad/ Public Enemy. These tracks come from an era when in my opinion hip hop had so much more energy, before MC's were simply getting blunted, prime cuts like these were perfectly compatable with UK hardcore records and therefore were able to really move a crowd. Think Silvah Bullet or Hi -Jak tracks getting dropped at raves mixing in with early Shut Up and Dance records. What's so appealing about this collection is that it manages to sound of it's time but still remains fresh. Lyrically there is a good balance of humour and tales of urban culture, politics, beating rival crews and all that good stuff. Expect tough and powerful uptempo breaks, dark and raw apocalyptic samples, dope cutting and scratching and serious B-boy attitude. The vinyl edition comes with key selected tracks to get busy with on the 1210's while the CD comes with a bonus disc which is another extra album. High grade audio ammo > Posse's beware.

* Rugged, Raw, Rapid and Ruthless, like a British Public Enemy perhaps, TCM rank alongside legends of Britcore Hip
Hop such as Hijack, The Demon Boyz & Silvah Bullet. Their previous records are certainly among the rarest in the genre
and their message not as widely heard… but that is about to change with the release of this compilation of their back
catalog, associated projects and previously unreleased tracks.

* “I remember walking into one of my local record shops in Wolverton, MK (I think it was called World Beats) and hearing
this record playing. It had just come out and was by a local crew, it totally blew me away hearing that darth vader theme
music over some raw drums and homegrown vocals. This was a buzz because it was people who lived near me, outside
of London, making dope Hip Hop and putting it on wax. The crew later moved into making rave/early jungle style tracks
like the the classic 'baptised by dub'.” Evil-Ed

* Wanna get hold of their first 2 releases, on their own label? You’ll be lucky to get change out of £800!

* This release contains all those tracks plus 15 more and has been lovingly remastered to sound better than ever.

* Profile: DJ Halo and Chase 1 formed The Criminal Minds in 1985,and while at college DJ Halo met Iceski who would
become the lead emcee in The Criminal Minds. Upon meeting another DJ called Spatts they released their first EP
entitled 'Guilty As Charged', this EP was funded by Halo selling his decks and the group, plus friends and family chipping
in with some cash. Soon after Safe D and CMD joined the group and they released 'Tales From The Wasteland' again
independently on their own label. Many tracks were recorded but not released in the following years. Aliases: 32 Troop
- Members: DJ Halo, DJ Spatts, MC Iceski… and more!

* TCM recently performed at Mass Hysteria hip hop convention in Hamburg and at the sold-out Rephlex 19th
anniversary party in London; they are continuing to play live in 2011.
