Not a huge amount of point in me reviewing this one as I'm sure you're all more than familiar with the work of ESG (Emerald, Sapphire and Gold). If not then you don't get out dancing enough. The A side is an instrumental version of 'Dance' ESG's finest example of pretension free new wave funk. All the ingredients are here; a funky-ass bassline, a sharp drum track dominated by tambourine, cheeky hand claps and accompanied by a classic soul/ R'n'B vocal line of the most infectious nature. An absolute classic. B-side 'Tiny Sticks' originally featured on ESG's 'Come Away With ESG' LP and is another fine example of the ESG formula in play. Again, beats and bassline are the dominant feature with a healthy dose of additional percussion keeping the kids up on their feet. You could spin this track in a loop for hours and the dance floor would be more than happy to oblige you. A great introduction to the group.
ESG’s iconic ‘Dance’ is available as a 7” single along with the foot stomping ‘Tiny Sticks’. Featuring on the current Xbox Kinect advert, Dance is the epitome of ESG’s beat building funk. A funky bass line and clappy drums ensure those feet keep moving. Tiny Sticks, similar in beat and ‘get moving’ attitude, is from the same 1983 LP ‘Come Away With ESG’. Both tracks have been released on the two-disc “Dance To The Best of ESG”, a comprehensive compilation of New York’s legendary punk/funk family a air – ESG (Emerald, Sapphire and Gold.) For the very first time, all of the songs that made the band such an innovative influence are available in a single release. Covering their earliest Martin Hannett produced tracks such as “Moody” and “UFO” right through their more recent killer tunes, this compilation leans heavily on the foundation that made them one of the most sampled artists of all-time, while touching on every one of their stellar records. Legends in punk, hip-hop, funk and house music: All hands were clapping in time to their beat. With “Dance To The Best Of ESG” that celebration is just getting started.
