Our single of the week (21st January 2011)
...according to our Brian on Thu 20 Jan, 2011.
Yeah. Violent Femmes, The Clean & Beat Happening. Squash them into a mad 7" vinyl patty and you get The Beets new single! 'Pick Another Corner' is comprised of really breathless, timeless, strummy/slacker indie garage rock with a sturdy K records influence and a thoroughly adorable core element. It's woefully short & leaves me really panting for more - the female backing coos are out of this world!! The other 'A' side (for this is a double) 'Time Brought Age' is much longer, languid, slower, woozy & really quite wonderful as well. A hint of a 60s psych ballad edge to it? I'd love to hear this produced by Joe Meek or Phil Spector. If one wasn't dead & the other a jailbird.....So two very contrasting tracks from these peeps, I look forward to the new album with baited breath! The 8 panel artwork for this baby by band member Matt Volz is really, really seriously funny......
The Beets are back with their two best tracks yet. Recorded by Jarvis Taveniere at Rear House and mixed by JB Townsend of Crystal Stilts, the result is the Beets cleanest sounding recording to date. "Time Brought Age" is unlike any Beets track you've heard, with 12-string guitar, keyboards and recorder. "Pick Another Corner" is The Beets at their garage-pop best, clocking in under 2 minutes. It's like their mini-sized Between the Buttons. Comes with 4-panel poster sleeve by the Winston Smith/John Holmstrom of the Beets', Matt Volz.
