Our album of the week (14th January 2011)
...according to our Brian on Thu 13 Jan, 2011.
What is it with the US indie underground? Why is it they can't leave the 80s Brit post-punk/indie scene alone? I'm not moaning - this album is mint. Just lay back and from the offset listen to New Order stroking Felt in a dusty cupboard. Add some other soft, hazy mellow fabric of your choice and you've got a fine bizarre love triangle. The wondrous single 'Hamilton Road' reminds me of the very loveliest tunes by Leeds' own Spectrals (his UK spiritual cousins, I reckon) then it all goes 'dinky lovelorn lo-fi strum land' again & I feel a little flicker of joy up my spine & a faint tear in my eye. This lad, he's got one real sweet nature lazing just beneath his wistful shambling tunes indeed. His effortless employment of emotionally stimulating chords is quietly electrifying! He also knows his way around analogue electronics very intuitively. 'The Razor's Edge' sees him forging some kinda psychic link with The Wirral's Forest Swords, then he'll casually throw us an idyllic summery folk-laden instrumental infused with heartfelt contentment!! This album, is stuffed to the gills with countless amazing celebratory tunes that aren't scared of just ambling amiably or drowsily chuffing away, deliriously self-absorbed. I think he's got a really nice voice - dreamy & slacker-ish but he cleverly interjects the 'hits' with some corking instrumental interludes that bring even more joy to my table. Business Lady is a little in love with this charming chap & I for one can't blame her. Shame she's away for a couple of days battering skins in her mad grunge band, I'd like to sit & listen to some more of this beaut with her....
Ducktails is the one-man psychedelic pop project of Matthew Mondanile, guitarist for New Jersey s Real Estate and, more importantly, a proud son of the mid-1980s. At 22 years old, he started releasing his own cassette albums. His first 7-inch came out on Breaking World Records and was followed by a string of LPs, cassettes, and CDs on independent labels like Not Not Fun, Olde English Spelling Bee, Release the Bats, Arbor and Goaty Tapes. Now surrounded by a crew of young songwriters, Mondanile spends his time either touring or recording in the basement of his parent s house. Categorized by David Keenan as part of the hypnagogic pop movement, Ducktails realizes a shared cultural memory and nostalgia through various genres. Ducktails III: Arcade Dynamics is Mondanile s third official full-length LP and first for Woodsist Records Past releases on Not Not Fun, Olde English Spelling Bee, Release the Bats, etc.
