Hot Club de Paris mark their triumphant return with ‘Free the Pterodactyl 3’, a compilation of the band’s sold out and critically acclaimed 2010 offerings.
The release features 12 tracks taken from their two 10” EP’s ‘With Days Like This As Cheap As Chewing Gum, Why Would Anyone Want To Work?’ and ‘The Rise and Inevitable Fall of the High School Suicide Cluster Band’, both celebrated in the British music press upon release.
Still flying the flag for British DIY and operating with their usual punk rock ethic, the band recorded the self-produced album in their Liverpool rehearsal space.
Since the release of their much-lauded 2006 debut ‘Drop it ‘til it Pops’, the band’s art-punk sound has expanded. Feverish energy has been harnessed by melancholic and poetic narrative, gilded with harmony-laden elation, and amplified by the group’s ever-present maze of continually-changing time signatures.
With bursts of Minutemen-inspired dance-punk and rock action reminiscent of Led Zeppelin and The Who, ‘Free the Pterodactyl 3’ steers the listener through smart wordplay, whimsical tales, and sad reflection, a transformation which has seen Hot Club go from strength to strength.
Hot Club de Paris are Paul Rafferty (vocals/bass/baritone), Matthew Smith guitar/vocals) and Alasdair Smith (drums/vocals).
Signed to taste-makers Moshi Moshi in 2005, the group released debut ‘Drop it ‘til it Pops’ in October 2006 to fanfare and plaudits aplenty. The band returned in 2008 with their second album, the much-heralded ‘Live at Dead Lake’, recorded with Chicago-based producer Brian Deck (Modest Mouse, Iron and Wine, Ugly Casanova).
The Liverpool-based trio toured both albums extensively, playing hundreds of gigs worldwide. Hot Club have spent much of 2010 touring their current EPs and have now returned to the studio to write a new full length album, expected in summer 2011
