Should Have by Cloud Nothings

4...according to our on Thu 13 Jan, 2011.

A summery splash of energetic almost punk-pop from the good old US of A. Cloud Nothings is one guy called Dylan, but when he tours he utilises a full band, much like that whiny fuck from Wavves. I guess it shares the same MacBook as Wavves, but this guy's not on YouTube crying his little arse off, so I like Cloud Nothings. This single is immediate, catchy and has a sweet chorus. Its still pop-punk though. Its about two yards and a key chain away from being Green Day or summat. The whole thing is served up on a totally sweet picture disc. It's a great single and it really demands attention.

Sometimes you don’t need to sum up a song with flowery metaphors; it has the catchiest melody, played with such drive and sheer ferocity, it’s just a darn good earful. And that’s what you get with each track from Cleveland’s Cloud Nothings.

One year on since 18-year-old Dylan Baldi was making lo-fi indie rock on a crappy computer in his parent's suburban basement comes ‘Should Have’, the next single to be taken from the band’s self-titled debut album. Furiously hurtling along at 100mph, it’s an upbeat slice of high-octane power punk pop with the kind of freewheeling start-keep-going guitar lines that could only come from breaking out the basement and onto the live scene as anyone who caught the band’s recent tour will know.

Produced by Baltimore's Chester Gwazda, known for his work with Dan Deacon and Future Islands, Should Have’s energy is relentless, coming over with a US coastal breeziness shining through yet with a crispness and boldness that Dylan always envisioned showcasing. It’s the epitome of Dylan’s transition from lo-fi to hi-fi scuzz in one foul swoop. Emotion, check. Excitement, check. Grooves, check.

As a bonus, both digital and 7” formats will include the belting brand new, exclusive b-side "I Know (You're All Done With Me)”, the picture disc also featuring photos taken whilst the band were on their recent European tour.

“I always knew I’d follow you,” he wails. Not likely. With more of this on the horizon thanks to the band’s forthcoming self-titled debut long-player, it’s just a matter of time before we’re joining the legion of bloggers and taste-makers already on board by following Cloud Nothings ourselves.
