Anyone hankering for follow-up material to Chain's outstanding debut 'Down with Liberty...Up With Chains' will be pleased to hear that he's crafted one of them there Dub Narcotic Disco Plate 7"s. This one takes the root of 'Down With Liberty''s opener 'Chain Gang Theme (I see)' and runs with it, adding new vocals and generally monkeying around with the original mix. It's a good one too, especially the B-side which also features the beautiful vocal tones of K main dude and Beat Happening frontman Calvin Johnson; he's the one who makes the dub plates I believe. He's a good lad.
While recording their 1st album at Dub Narcotic Studio, Down with Liberty…Up with Chains! [KLP203], Chain & The Gang had so many good, extra songs and radical ideas, it became obvious that it would spill over onto a Dub Narcotic Disco Plate 7” single; Chain (aka Ian Svenonius) croons on “Cry, Cry, Cry (Over You)” – culling inspiration from background vocals by Sixx (The Vibrarians), and a stinging piano solo by Brian Weber (Dub Narcotic Sound System). Extra strong, no cream, in a word: classic. On the other side, Selector Dub Narcotic (aka Calvin Johnson) added his own melodica ourishes, and voila! you’ve got the brand new Chain & The Gang 45 rpm record: a logical link from Liberty to the forthcoming Chain & The Gang long-player, Music’s Not For Everyone [KLP220] out in February 2011. “Ian Svenonius is the jam. If you don’t believe me, go ask someone’s older brother. Then you won’t be surprised when everyone is making spooky jailhouse doo-wop in four years. You see, the way this crazy game works is, rst Svenonius is in an awesome band, then a few years later, way too many bands try to be that band. It’s been happening for years and it ain’t gonna stop now.” - Tokion Magazine
Side A: Cry, Cry, Cry Over You. Side B: Snakes On A Plane
