I'm not sure what is going on here. Zs are one of the most harsh & alarmingly powerful bands i've ever seen live, mainly due to the violently pummeling tribal drums they deployed between their curious jazzy minimalist improv workouts. I left the building thoroughly impressed! The one new track here takes up an entire side of vinyl and is a very odd, spasticated piece of music indeed. Lots of collapsing, stumbling percussion, drunken keys, free jazz elements and crazy squawking sounds. Totally mashed-up man. Genesis B-Orridge (what the fuck is that breyer he's started brandishing? Huh?) throws some insectoid techno shapes into the mix to create a cool scrunchy fuzzed-out screeing mind-fuck with his pal Bryin Dall. Proper ace tune, once called 'Concert Black'. Eccentric old-guard beat mangler Cex also shoehorns an abstracted techno element into his mix but then, carelessly, drops it down a flight of rather wonky stairs, only to carefully re-assemble 'Acres' as a freakish, stuttering mutant of a thing. Think of a much less foreboding Amon Tobin maybe? Jimmy Thirlwell weigs in at the end with a version of 'New Slaves' This closely resembles the real intense majesty of Zs but i'm unsure how much extra input he's added or what he may have removed? It's all too brief anyway, I need a longer fix.....GET THE PROPER ALBUM TOO!!
“Zs have transformed itself into a battering ram of brackish sound and befuddling rhythms--think of Steve Reich phasing experiments produced into a blackened soup by the Boredoms and you’re getting close; think Black Dice performed by Sun Ra and you’re getting closer.”Village Voice We are pleased to bring you the new record from Zs, entitled New Slaves Part II: Essence Implosion! It serves as a companion (or sequel) to New Slaves, their acclaimed double album from Spring 2010 and features a series of focused and diverse remixes of that material by such luminaries as Thee Majesty (Genesis Breyer P-Orridge and Bryin Dall), JG Thirlwell (Foetus), Cex, Gabe Andruzzi (The Rapture), Zebrablood (Excepter), Weasel Walter (Flying Luttenbachers), and Ecstatic Sunshine. On New Slaves Part II: Essence Implosion! Zs’ continue to embrace the studio as instrument, including not just the faculties of a studio in their process, but outside remixers and producers as well, demonstrating the ultimately collaborative nature of their approach to music. It is both the perfect accompaniment to New Slaves and a definitive musical statement in its own right. Zs have managed to craft a work that both reflects on (and even interacts with) their past, while also looking forward to its future through new collaborations.
