Moritz von Oswald Trio - Restructure 2

Restructure 2 by Moritz von Oswald Trio

4...according to our on Wed 22 Dec, 2010.

This one builds the drama and sense of mystery as a repetitive Krautrock-ish grooves holds the framework for Tikiman to drop some guitar abstractions over the top while Marc Muellbauer's bass adds an almost swinging disco feel. To be honest I've found most of the Moritz Von Oswald Trio stuff to be initially under whelming but have been rewarded on repeated listens and I think the same will hold true for this particular cut. I do like Loderbauer and von Oswald's keys which drop later, lifting the track up to new heights, as sparse as they are, but then Von Oswald's is a master at that. For me though it's all about the Mala (Digital Mystik)s remix on the flip, who as expected sprinkles the tune with his special magic dread dust with stomping mid tempo beat and seriously low-end bassline, a smattering of futuristic synths and the job's a good 'un. Reducing the track to almost zero during the break down then kicking back with some sinister synthetic horn motifs. Proper Mala action!!!

Musically, this new stepper appears to swell out of thin air. Immense and minimal, the propulsive
groove — monstrous child of Krautrock — is overlain during its twelve minutes with the blues abstraction
of Tikiman's guitar, the swing and effects of Marc Muellbauer's double bass, Delay's digressive steel
percussion, and the otherworldly keys of Loderbauer and von Oswald.
With characteristic intensity, Mala's rebuild ratchets up the drama and dread. A mounting barrage of bleeps
rains down on a vicious, clopping drum pattern and steely synths. The bass is transfixing.
An immensely powerful record.
