Sometimes a bit of Spring cleaning is very worthwhile - even in Autumn!
Certainly, this was the case for Running On Air (AKA Winchester-based Joseph K Evans) when he relistened to some old tracks whilst undertaking an audio file audit.
The tracks relate to the period 1994 to 2000, when Joe first started experimenting with electronica. Nowadays, Joe's work resounds with hip references and echoes of dubstep, Warp artists and the Ghost Box movement, but back then Joe was a working draughtsman, fresh out of the Royal Scottish Academy of Music.
With a family background in Folk and an academic grounding in the New Classics, electonica was a departure for the young Evans but one he took to like solder to a circuit board. Arranging his complex rhythms with an architectural precision, these vintage pieces build to impressive sonic soundscapes that just don't sound like anything else out there.
If that all sounds a bit cold and formal, be assured, tracks like “Turn To Gold” and “Peaceful” have a clear signpost to the dance floor - and jazzy chord structures and grooves abound throughout.
Joe has divided the back catalogue compilation into selected (darker, more serious) and unselected (b-sides, lighter works) discs, but both more than hold their own and mark a significant stepping stone in the story of an artist whose work is becoming more widely appreciated with every release.
“Selected Works ‟94 – „00” is available as a Limited Edition (100) CD-R and Download. “Unselected Works ‟94 – ‟97” is only available as a Limited Edition (100) Bonus CD-R in conjunction with “Selected Works ‟94 – „00” and will not be released as a Download.
