These are one of those bands/blokes who I've gone years without ever managing to actually hear and only having a vague perception of what they sound like. Well things is different now 'cos now I know what two of their songs sound like but it doesn't seem like they're particularly representative from the 'Is this Iron and Wine?' and 'I'm sure they're usually way better than this' comments going around the office. I'm finding the A-side fairly dire, a poppy plodder (or ploppy podder) without much of a hint of their alt.country roots and some of the ropiest lyrics I've heard in a fair while. 'Biting Your Tail' on the flip sounds largely like Scritti Politti in full-on smooth mode as Ant immediately pointed out. I can't really say that it's helping their cause. Won't somebody please think of the children?
· ‘Kiss Each Other Clean’ - Iron And Wine’s debut
album for 4AD and first studio effort in over three
years – shows Sam Beam continuing to mine folk,
African, rock, country, and Jamaican musical
traditions for inspiration whilst also switching the
focus of his studio lens to 60s and 70s pop
influences.
· The results are astounding, serving to underline
his ascent to one of today’s greatest storytellers,
able to craft meticulous tales full of forlorn love,
religious imagery and wistful dreams.
· ‘Walking Far From Home’ is the first single to be
taken from the album.
· Sam and band arrive in the UK for headline tour in
March 2011.
