David Lynch - Good Day Today / I Know

It's difficult to even attempt to measure the effect David Lynch's film-making has had on the way I think about film over the years. From the impact of first watching Eraserhead, Blue Velvet and Twin Peaks every week in my youth, to being more recently terrified by Inland Empire, Lynch's impact on cinema and popular culture is, without question, phenomenal. Beyond the visual aspect though he's also always used sound in a visionary way. Whether it be Roy Orbison, Laibach, Julee Cruise or Angeleo Badalamenti. From his earliest productions, sound has been an integral/ key role in Lynch's vision. And so here we have two original Lynch tracks with eight remixes housed in lovely fold-out CD packaging and double 180g vinyl with additional Vaughn Oliver original print. The whole thing could pass for an old Cocteu Twins record with ease. The first original track 'Good Day Today' is like a sort of bad nightmare of Daft punk remixing Moby's 'Go' which was originally based around a Lynch movie sample yet also seriously moved some ravers butts back then. To be honest this is a huge disappointment. Lynch does the vocal and wrote the lyrics and then the synth programming and engineering have been done by Dean Hurley. I suspect most of the real work here has been done by him... Stop me if I'm wrong... The vocal has a sort of vocoder effect and the overall feel is of a sub-par house tune. 'I Know' has a sort of sleazy Lynchian trip-hop vibe to it coming off like an old Portishead tune if they'd sampled a few snatches of the audio in the strip club from 'Fire Walk With Me'. Various remixes make up the remainder of the album but I'm afraid I can't bring myself to play them fully but did a brief skip through and so will cut to the chase with a quick listing of contributers: Underworld, Sasha, Boys Noize, Ratcliffe (Simon from Basement Jaxx), Diskjokke, Skream, John Hopkins plus an exclusive 'Sunday Best Slow Motion Waltz' from Julian Peck.
