Fabric 55: Shackleton by Shackleton

I wonder how long it will be before this lad develops the internationally renowned nickname Shaky? The two folks I've encountered with that nickname have been an utterly hateful man with DT's who was once a manager where I worked & that karaoke Cliff/Elvis hybrid with over-tight jeans who ultimately became a classic Viz parody!! Sam Shackleton is THE don though, & unlike the other two I love him dearly & his music moves me in extremely profound ways. I'd like top say spiritually also, although I'm not particularly of any religious persuasion. Unless you include the Cult of Sam S. This man knows how to throw bass around. I mean, Brett & I saw him and the whole spectacle definitely put a smile on our faces. I'd like to christen him Shaky Snaky actually, because of his savvy use of highly rhythmic percussion (see: lashings-of) and subtly applied, yet somehow boisterous employment of excitable low-end. This mix - derived from established vinyl releases & unreleased dubplates - resembles a madly tranced-out snake of not-too-venomous, but slinky proportions. He also weaves some fantastic spacious trippy mystique & carefully considered samples into his music. The Skull Disco gear seemed a little more stripped-back & sinister sounding in parts, with some frankly disturbing bass interjections to be experienced. His newer work for Perlon & his own 'Woe to the Septic Heart' project carries a more considered, lushly layered dream-like quality. I love both sides of this musical coin. Throughout his entire journey he's carried with him a powerful hallmark & that is his respectful use of space & time. A strong awareness of the multiple dimensions of rhythmic electronic music. Never less than awesomely tribal & seminal, this mix is the bee's tits. As with the Surgeon installment, this is the legend that is Fabric hosting a legend. In my book anyway. Respect.

· The elusive Shackleton showcases his incendiary
live set on ‘fabric 55’. A disorienting trip through
unclassifiable styles awaits those brave enough to
enter the void.

· Like Ricardo Villalobos and Omar S before,
Shackleton’s contribution to the ‘fabric’ series blurs
the boundaries between artist album and mix CD,
featuring only his own tracks.

· The mix consists mainly of unreleased, exclusive
material alongside a handful of earlier tracks, and
all tracks have been re-worked into entirely new,
never-before-heard versions.
