Sufjan Stevens' new one sounds amazing. The first track alone has more ideas and originality than a million other twats I don care to mention. His creative output has been super pretty much from the get-go and this record is superb too. The first track 'All Delighted People (Original Version)' references the classic "Sounds of Silence" by Simon & Garfunkel. It's ace. It's emotive and grandiose and I reckon it's a great start to the record. Maybe one of the best I've heard in ages. The rest of this EP is hugely involving and I kept getting drawn into it so much I almost forgot to breathe. I came to, spluttering and proceeded to take in the rest of the record. It has all the hallmarks of a classic. It has luscious arrangements and amazing musicianship. It has tales that you will find heartbreaking yet totally life affirming. His voice sounds amazing too. The other stand out moment for me is the atmospheric 'Heirloom' which is a song full of longing and romance that will melt even the most cold of hearts. The whole EP has so many great moments it would be a travesty to give the game away with pithy words. I don think we have an 'EP of the Week' category but if we did Sufjan should be sitting on top of the pile looking down on countless noise mongers and techno fucks. A classic!!
· The ‘All Delighted People’ mini album is built
around two different versions of Sufjan Stevens’
long-form epic ballad ‘All Delighted People’, a
dramatic homage to the Apocalypse, existential
ennui, and Paul Simon’s ‘Sounds Of Silence’.
· The song was originally workshopped on Sufjan’s
Autumn 2009 tour.
· Other songs on the EP include the 17-minute
guitar jam for single mothers ‘Djohariah’, and the
gothic piano ballad ‘The Owl And The Tanager’, a
live-show mainstay.
· Gatefold CD and LP packaging.
