Our single of the week (3rd December 2010)
...according to our Phil on Thu 02 Dec, 2010.
This is cool. You get a red vinyl disc in a green disco bag or a green vinyl disc in a red disco bag. Either way you're set up for one of the most Christmassy things in stoner rock history. These two tracks appeared on a cassette many moons ago but that was only given to friends and family so this is the first time they've become commercially available. I heard a bit of this down the phone about six months ago (don't ask...) and I thought it sounded ace. The Shjips tackle two classic Xmas tunes: 'Auld Lang Syne' and 'Oh Tannenbaum'. If you're a fan of the Wooden Shjips and you you're familiar with the two songs they're covering then you pretty much already know what they're gonna sound like. The Shjips don't veer from their stonery cyclical fuzzy sound. You could argue that if you've heard one record by 'em you've heard 'em all. But when they get in to that groove they do it so well. I don't really like Christmas songs as a rule (the only ones I like are by Greg Lake, Low and the South Park Xmas album). I can add this to the list as their version of 'Oh Tannenbaum' is pretty awesome! Lots of jingly bells and you get a locked groove of them at the end so it can be Christmas all the time potentially! I don't know why I'm so excited about this as I fucking hate Christmas but there you go. 400 for the UK, 1000 for the world. You do the maths, I'm too busy listening to a locked groove of bells.
1000 ONLY, 500 RED VINYL ,500 green vinyl..(and yes, the red vinyl is packaged in a green disco bag, and vice versa..)and a locked groove to boot.. This is a remastered, reissue of a Wooden Shjips Xmas cassette (very few around, sent to friends and family) ..in time for the festive season..the Wooden Shjips version of two seasonal classics, you will be surprised, you will dance..these two 8 minute plus (infinite if you count the locked groove on the oh tannenbaum side) workouts will have you supping eggnog and stuffing stockings in a very groovy manner. The best seasonal sounds you will hear this year! In time for their live jaunt on this side of the water in December (ATP, UK and EU shows)..San Francisco s psychedelic avatars of sound deliver the goods once more.

So now we know what Santas little helpers listen to when they are stoned!
Brilliant record.
