Our album of the week (17th December 2010)
...according to our Business Lady on Thu 16 Dec, 2010.
Hype Williams return with another fantastic LP, this time on De Stijl who we're responsible for releasing their first long sold out 7" earlier in the year. You should all be familiar with Hype by now but for those of you still unschooled this London duo scribble sketchbook style all over the track. Yeah, that's right, I'm talking snippits, tit bits and the like. H. W mash up pop culture references, ambient jams, cheap synths, dub bass lines and cryptic vocal loops to create something that is unique, reliable and (most importantly) all their own. That they do it all under the strict supervision of a ton of ganja pipes and smoky spliffs that tell 'em what to do, motivate and eventually reward and shhhhiiii-t. 'Find Out What Happens...' features some of Hype's strongest compositions to date including the outstanding 'Blue Dream' that's been on their Myspace for a while now and a talking point here in the office since the first 7" arrived on our doorstep last year. Also included is an outstandingly effective cover of Sade's 'The Sweetest Taboo' as well as the 'Rescue Dawn' trilogy ('Rescue Dawn 3' also ft. on 'Do 'Roids...') of which part one features a bizarre vocal that lists all of the Pokemon characters in typical Hype Williams custom mongy-slowed-down style... 'Gooooottttaa Caaatccchhh 'eeemm Aaaaallll'. There's tons more to discover on 'Find Out What Happens...', more samples and reference not yet understood, more cryptic vocal contributions left to unwrap and some beautiful sounds to accompany those all essential christmas lifepipes. A truly unique and inspired LP. Can't wait to see what's next.
Hype Williams may or may not consist of two people named D. Blunt and Inga Copeland, it may or may not still be part of an 18 year relay project thought up by a lady named Denna Frances Glass. Lately there has also been rumor that it is the side project of singer Joss Stone (she evidently financed the making of it). Either way, when asked for a statement concerning find out what happens when people stop being polite, and start gettin reel, we've been informed via email from Inga Copeland only these words : ritolin (sic) and rama lama 555 (sic).
