It's too fucking early and I'm too fucking tired to do justice to what I'm hearing now! Anger!!! Brain Idea are a relatively fresh new face on the scene with only a single tape release and this debut for real on Permanent to their name but they certainly know how to craft a banging tune. The Clean are an obvious reference point on 'The Surviving Scrolls' but Brain Idea take elements from all the classic D.I.Y indie pop, post punk, rock 'n' roll, krautrock and new wave bands to forge a flavour all of their own. It sounds amazing too! Whoozy phase and reverb saturate the mix and bring a warming glow to the music that reminds me of the last Women LP 'Public Strain'. Sonically it's more in keeping with the UK 80's underground than the 70's New York scene but that haunting quality remains. This is very much classic indie rock played with style and conviction. Oh, there's even a cover of The Clean's 'Getting Older' on here. They sound like a curious bunch these... Word is they were behind a tape entitled 'NOi!', a compilation of classic punk cuts reworked in a krautrock style which sounds amazing... good lads these. A great record reviewed poorly by me...soz dudes.
Brain Idea is a relatively new Chicago band with nothing but one short cassette tape release to their name, until now. Their second tape release is also their debut full-length on Permanent Records. Here's what we said about their first cassette tape release back in December of '09: One of Chicago's most exciting new bands! This is their debut tape and its UK DIY and NZ's the Clean influenced pop. Catchy as hell and totally DIY-style rock'n'roll. Highly recommended! By the way, re-recorded versions of these songs (and some extra material) will be released on your very own Permanent Records imprint later this year. Grab this 'demo' tape before it's gone to tide you over 'til then. Well, the demo tape is out-of-print, but "The Survival Scrolls" is here in all of its fully-realized glory. The band took most of the material on the demo tape and re-recorded it with much more depth and reverb, especially on the vocals. There are some great instrumental interludes that tie the tracks together which are quite kraut-y in nature (these guys were the ones behind that NOi! tape (classic Oi! punk cuts covered krautrock-style), mind you). These guys are also in a CCR cover band called Graveyard Train, so you know they're of good taste. They cover the Clean for chrissakes. Fans of lo-fi DIY pop, krautrock, and CCR-esque maturity will absolutely dig Brian Idea.
