The Green Journey by AR & Machines

I had no idea what this was at all but I wondered why we got so many (despite me ordering 'em a few weeks ago...) so I went and checked it out and I remembered! Recorded back in 1974 this is a reissue of some awesome lost Krautrock album and film. Apparently both Julian Cope and Brian Eno have both wetted their knickers about this release with the latter saying it influenced his Another Green World album. There's some well spacey shit here with psychedelic rock riffs, weird vocals layered and thrown from speaker to speaker, electronic experimentation, cyclical complex rhythms, experimental folk. Basically lots of Can and Amon Duul in there. It's great actually. There's a DVD as well of the film, which I think this is the soundtrack for. So you get 2 discs for your money. One audio and one visual. Definitely one for you mushroom heads!

What can a musician do, when he is fed up with his role as a beat strumming teen idol? In Achim Reichel's case, he searched for "sounds beyond the 4/4-beat. I was just trying something out with my guitar, when out of the blue the Akai X-3300 began to repeat endless cascades of guitar echoes" Thus began A. R. & Machines and 'The Green Journey'

Recorded 36 years ago, "The Green Voyage" had become a rare cult item amongst krautrock enthusiasts. Here it is finally re-issued with an accompanying film inspired by the music. Julian Cope, ex-leader of The Teardrop Explodes and author of the well-informed book 'KrautRockSampler' (1995), called 'The Green Voyage' "the final result of a kind of higher awareness...", and Brian Eno admitted that 'The Green Voyage' had been the main source of inspiration for his own album 'Another Green World' (1974). The people at San Francisco hip music store Aquarius Records wrote: "How come that the long overdue A.R. & Machines reissues just keep making us fall in love with Ol' Achim Reichel over and over again? Cause it's simply some of the best krautrock that was ever made, that's how"!

Previous album "Echo" is one of Uncut's "50 Great Lost Albums" - Aug 2010
