Trembling Blue Stars - Fast Trains and Telegraph Wires

Fast Trains and Telegraph Wires by Trembling Blue Stars

3...according to our on Thu 18 Nov, 2010.

Man I'm picking 'em this week... OK, Trembling Blue Stars are another band I know nothing about so again, excuse my ignorance. Phil tells me they formed from the ashes of Field Mice adding a slightly more dance orientated/baggy sound to there previously ultra twee indie pop style. From what I can tell this is TBS's swan song so it's nice that Elefant records have gone to the trouble of compiling these two releases into one handsomely designed die cut, gatefold sleeve. Really into this trend for packaging CD's like little LP's... As an artist I'd be very grateful. Trembling Blue Stars are probably pretty chuffed too I reckon. Anyway, TBS dabble in the classic mid 80s style of c86 indie pop. I never really got into the whole Sarah Records/c86 sound, I was too busy listening to Kenny Loggins and Jan Hammer back in '86 but that's excusable, I was only seven. This is all tastefully executed stuff with more than a hint of St. Etienne, Ride and other early 90s faves coming to mind. Not my bag really but a must for any fans of the band.

TBS bow out with a double CD on Elefant. The eleven songs that make up "Fast Trains and Telegraph Wires" and the seven on the second disc (EP) "Cicely Tonight Volume One" are simply some of the best pieces of work by Bobby Wratten and co. Marvels like "Cold Colours" and "All Our Tomorrows" find TREMBLING BLUE STARS more intense, organic and spirited than ever before, while songs like "Frosting", "Half-Light" and "The Dark World of The Broken" give us the subtler, melancholic side of the band. . "Fast Trains and Telegraphs Wires"  includes the work of Jonathan Akerman, Beth Arzy and Keris Howard again. Cath Carroll (of MIAOW) contributes vocals on  "The Imperfection of Memory". And, the album closes with "The Hidden Quarter", a beautiful composition dedicated to the film and video director, Derek Jarman . "Cicely Tonight Volume One" offers the more experimental side of Wratten.
