Our single of the week (5th November 2010)
...according to our Phil on Thu 04 Nov, 2010.
This lot make me think of Kate Bush which is always a good thing. I love thinking of Kate Bush. She's the friend I never had. The cover of this record is a load of wonky ole snakes which is quite eye-catching and it gives you an idea of the wonkyness within. This is a deep record. The sound is slow and heavy, there's samples everywhere (one of which is from an early Art of Noise tune I think) and there's a dubstepy thing going on. It's not really dubstep though... they describe their sound as vaseline smeared on a Trax Record which is as good as anyone will get I reckon. There's a hazy lazy stoned feel to it as the melodies and beat chug along slowly and heavily while that overly load hi hat claws way at your brains. Kinda like a slowed down Ikonika. That was 'Head Anthem' and I'm totally sold! 'Purple Stuff' is more techy and dubstep-like with a kinda of lo-fi bedroom production feel to it and it's quite Tempa-ish. 'Phantasy Re-up' is a disconcerting wobbly super-slow number with an acid thing going. It's making my stomach feel weird. One of the most inventive electronics records I've heard in a long while!
Following on from their debut 12” ‘I Like Triangles’ on Backyard Records, Italian Beach Babes are proud to announce Hounds of Hate second offering the 3 track 12” Head Anthem.
This London trio drop syrupy euphoria hits for the very late night. Their heavy, low-tech sound evokes, in their words, "a synthetic weave stuffed in a floppy drive" or "vaseline smeared on a Trax record". Hounds of Hate have catalogued diverse movements from their tweens by recreating exact sounds and recording techniques from that era. The conflict is in the naivete of their candid homage opposed by their own pessimism and tendency towards irony.
Their Recent US tour saw Hounds of Hate sharing stages with both Caribou and Fuck Buttons while in the UK their hypnotic live shows are attracting more and more fans each time they play out.
