Frozen Geese - The Starseed

There's some strange people around these parts. One such character is Dave Lazonby, once of local experimental krauters Lazerboy, collaborator with Damo Suzuki and head of the shadowy improvisational collective Geese. They've now added the frozen prefix and released a cassette, recorded onto 4 track in a church apparently. Now, I don't ever expect the obvious from these guys. With Steve Goodwin (the legendary "Drummer from Cud") twatting the skins, 'The Starseed' means business from the off. You're chucked into a vortex of twisted metronomic Spacerock which strangely reminds me of The Telescopes on the opening track. Throughout you're treated to walls of morphing, shuddering, squalling guitar, possessed cyclic basslines and clattering, rhythmical drum patterns. It sounds satisfyingly lo-fi, wild & freeform and, most importantly of all, it takes you on a really interesting journey. The thing here is that this music dofs a cap to the past but then goes sideways into more individual territory. No retro pastiche here (apart from the crazy sleeve design which is beautifully tongue-in-cheek) Dave L. loves a concept (check their history out - it's peppered with demented projects such as the Anton-Wilson baiting 3" CD project) and this fits nicely in with the current fad for all things spooly & analogue. This is on Vanity Case who released the recent Psychic TV 'Maggot Brain' thing so you know you're in the hands of professionals.
