Compression Session by Ben Klock

5...according to our on Thu 18 Nov, 2010.

Ben Klock's one of the residents at Berghain and his recent mix CD went down a treat in my ears and I'm glad to say this 12" is now doing the same. 'Compression Session 1' kicks off with nary more than a dull, thudding kick pounding away in the midrange - as though through a wall - and hints of light, twinkly synth work up above before proceeding to constantly morph and twist itself around so subtly and expertly that you almost don't notice how different the section you're on is compared to the part that was playing a minute ago.. Even though the elements have remained essentially the same. 'Static Test' kinda does what it says on the tin, with its Chain Reaction-esque stylings reminding (perhaps inevitably) of the grainy dub techno majesty of Monolake's immense 'Static'. 'Compression Session 2' comes off like a variation on the theme of the first, albeit slightly more submerged-sounding, but that doesn't make it in any way redundant. Probably the most I've enjoyed an Ostgut Ton 12" in a bit, all told.. And I usually do enjoy them a fair bit!

* Hot on the heels of his recent Berghain mix, Ben Klock continues his exploration into the many zones and movements
within the techno world. 'Compression Session 1' was previewed in the mix, segued between other tracks, but now we
have the chance to experience its full melancholic beauty, along with two other new tracks.

* Climbing synth themes float and swell amongst a thick and fittingly crisp barrage of drums in this rather anthemic yet
controlled session from Klock. Collecting together a positive, forward-driving and deeply powerful message, it could well
be one of the producer's most timeless moments. In contrast to the well-pronounced melodies of the lead cut, in 'TBA'
Klock concentrates on some really heavy, prominent raw grooves, allowing deep and gentle suggestions of melody to
filter through at times.

* 'Compression Session 2' is another rich and busy jam, that blends warm, analogue textures, frenetic tones and
accurate, intense drum programming.
