Double Vision by Munch Munch

4...according to our on Fri 26 Nov, 2010.

More goodies from team Upset The Rhythm. This time it's the debut from Munch Munch entitled 'Double Visions'. You may have heard these guys/girls on various comps included a One inch Badge 7" with Gay Against You and the excellent 'Worried Noodles' CD compiled by David Shrigley. M.M play a varied and playful take on indie pop with various strict rules in place to keep things interesting. That means no guitars, no drum machines, always live percussion. As a result of these imposed restrictions M.M's music is melodic and inventive whilst packing the required back beat to encourage a little dancing. Vocally the group are at thier best with dual harmonizing and cheeky melodic breakdowns giving the music an additional boost of character and charm. This is bold pop music made by kids who really care. Reminds me very much of Sparks...prog-pop is a dirty word to some (not me) but it's a safe description of what they've achieved here with 'Double Visions'.

* This is the debut from Bristol quartet, Munch Munch.

* For Fans Of: Sparks, Man Man, Deerhoof.

* Munch Munch have toured with the likes of Why?, No Age, Dirty Projectors.

* Previously known for their explosive and unpredictable live shows, this LP presents a more focused and ambitious side
of the band, without losing any of the visceral energy.

* After a string of split 7 inch and EP releases, 2009 saw them concentrate on new recordings.

* In order to curb their previous indulgences, the band set themselves various rules including that of not using any
guitars, and only using live percussion. The songs were initially sketched out on Piano, then fully realised using Farfisa
and Hammond Organs, Vibraphone, Marimba and an Analogue Synth. Recording took place in various studios, cellars,
practice spaces and houses over the course of 6 months.

* Taking in influences as varied as Sparks, Bacharach, ABBA, Philip Glass and 80s R & B, a concerted effort has been
made to engage with the structures of traditional “pop” song craft, while always being ready to tear up the rule book at
any opportunity.

* The band have toured the UK and Europe, playing with the likes of Dirty Projectors, Why?, No Age, Ponytail, Clues,
Late Of the Pier and Hot Chip. Along the way they have recorded a BBC Radio 1 Maida Vale session for Huw Stevens,
and played festivals including Lovebox, Truck, Tanned Tin Spain, and Imago Portugal.

* Previously on Tomlab, the band have released the Wedding EP. They were also featured alongside Hot Chip, Grizzly
Bear, TV on the Radio others on the David Shrigley compilation Worried Noodles.
