Promises (Appleblim & Peverelist Remix) by Bass Clef

At last, at fucking last. A beast of a week here at Normans and we try to review everything we can, so many records fall through the holes and disappear never be seen again so even if we hate something or just think its ok we try to tell you about it. Speed reviewing is the only way to try to cover everything but after trawling through my massive pile of reviews I find something that makes it all worthwhile. This is a superb 12" of deep dark late night dub (step), lots of heavy reverb and a lovely lolloping rhythm. Half way through it shifts emphasis with a heavily processed electro beat coming in. The flip side again uses the gorgeous dubbed out piano but with strident, frenetic beats, blissed out vocals, squelshy bass. I don't know which mix is which but it doesn't matter as they are both great. Brilliant stuff and highly recommended.

Late November sees the release of the new single by Bass Clef, 'Promises', taken from his critically-acclaimed
second album 'May The Bridges I Burn Light The Way'). Available only for a short time as a strictly-limited white
label pressing, the single’s lead side is a beautiful remix by two heavyweight bass music pioneers ; Appleblim (co-
founder of Skull Disco, head of Applepips) and Peverelist (owner of legendary Bristol label Punch Drunk). Together
they take 'Promises' into a wonderful six-minute stepper-haze somewhere between Berlin and Bristol, with a
deeper-than-deep sub bass, anchored underneath dubbed-out piano and vocal, and a euphoric synth floating
through it all. The original album version appears on the flipside, itself a euphorically elastic yet still hauntingly
melancholic stand-out track that picked up the lion’s share of radio and club play when ‘May The Bridges…’ was
first released late last year, most noteably from Huw Edwards (BBC R1) and Tom Robinson (BBC R6).
