No Joy - No Summer / No Joy

No Summer / No Joy by No Joy

4...according to our on Thu 28 Oct, 2010.

No Joy are a shoegaze dream-pop duo divided geographically (they are from LA and Montreal respectively) but united by the power of hazed-out rock and power blunts. They create the kind of floaty space rock you'd expect to here in the current musical climate but they totally rock that shit out with big distorted guitars and heavy live beats that, on 'No Summer' at least, verge on Dinger-style krautrock grooves by the end of the track. B-side 'No Joy' kicks up a similar fuss with it's layers of effected guitar and weighty drums but it's too fudgy to make out the subtleties of the melody...I can almost detect it somewhere in the distance though. Still, you can't fuck about with a real loud guitar now can you? Nice work.

NO JOY are Laura Lloyd and Jasamine White-Gluz. Divided geographically between Montreal and LA, yet together in musical minds these two girls create songs soaked in the haze, layered heavy and drawing influence on the brashness of early SST bands. This debut single is testament to this - released in the states on the Mexican Summer - it’s the perennial box of chocolates filled with razor wire, but even the most fastidious of modern music archaeologists won’t see this one coming.
