Oh this is good and so it should be as its scouse..erm...chanteuse Candie Payne, Adrian Flanagan (Kings Have Long Arms) and Dean Honer (All Seeing I). What could go wrong? Well nothing actually, the A side sounds as if Dusty Springfield was relocated to early 80's Sheffield or Shirley Bassey fronting Broadcast. A hell of a catchy tune mixing 60's songsmithery with synth pop. The B side.......well you can't have everything, its nothing The Flying Lizards haven't already done but its the A side you'll want it for.
Are You One is the debut single from new Sheffield based eccentronic pop duo The Chanteuse & The Crippled Claw and is the first release from Sheffield label, Arms Controller. The Chanteuse is the awesomely voiced Liverpool singer Candie Payne who you may have heard on her beautiful pop noir solo album, the critically acclaimed I Wish I Could Have Loved You More. Candie has also recently collaborated with Talking Heads' David Brynne, Paul Weller, Soft Machines' Kevin Ayers and toured the world as one of golden boy producer of the moment Mark Ronson's featured singers on his Versions tour. The Crippled Claw is a "one man Gorrilaz on a giro", Salford-born Adrian Flanagan aka Kings Have Long arms. Over the past eight years he's been putting out little DIY releases with everyone from Phil Oakey from electro pop legends The Human League, Ray Dorset from Mungo Jerry, Denise Johnston (Primal Scream and A Certain Ratio) and Mike Joyce & Andy Rourke from The Smiths to name a few who have popped by his bedsit to guest on his releases. Two years ago – and quite possibly ironically - the man with the Long Arms was in a major bike accident breaking both of his arms so badly specialists said he would struggle to ever play music again. His left wrist was smashed to smithereens and his right shoulder was described by the doctor as being “the sort of injury that only people who have been struck by lightning would suffer.” After a bunch of operations having re-breaks, plates and pins fitted, enduring endless physio whilst living in a world of pain (no, not Thom Yorke pain - real pain), he slowly started writing a bunch of demos using a laptop and a synth and large doses of pain killers. "The only part of my arms I could use was from my right wrist down. Luckily I have very strong knees." says Adrian. The results can be heard on Are You One the first single from the forthcoming The Chanteuse & The Crippled Claw album due for release early 2011 - produced by Dean Honer founder of Sheffield weirdo electronic pop group The All Seeing I and I.Monster. Dean has notched up and been behind hits for everyone from Britney Spears, Jarvis Cocker,Tony Christie, Add N To X, Moby, Moloko and has very recently produced the forthcoming comeback album by The Human League. Adrian Flanagan and Candie Payne have previously enjoyed a mini top 20 indie hit with a song called Big Umbrella (released by Domino records) which was championed by BBC 6Music, Stuart Maconie, Rob da Bank, Mark Lamarr and was even played on Adrian's beloved Coronation Street, not once but twice.
