Now I especially like this sort of music if some extra consideration is applied concerning where it's recorded, only if to attain the maximum levels of atmosphere. This Madison, WI duo have an utterly magical sound that merges dark/light ambience & fascinating field recordings with much loved bedfellows such as ponderous piano & sublime strings. They manage to achieve that rarest of things - ambient music that is capable of being incredibly evocative, mysterious & is incredibly detailed! I'm especially loving this ghostly neo-classicism & organic sound-art rubbing shoulders with such brilliantly eerie experimentation. I'm a bit stuck for words with this release as these lonely, minimalist passages can suddenly burst into the most beautiful tranquil glades of sound - tendrils of sleepy violin mixing it with recordings of crickets & hollow, clunking percussion that makes me smile & think of Moondog. This is absolutely the best thing i've heard on RW since the Hare & the Moon CD aeons ago. I advise you to purchase without a flinch & drink this improvised beauty in slowly. This is is a remarkable, understated & thought-provoking work constructed from a dazzling array of instrumentation, yet never, ever feels cluttered!
Rain Drinkers are a really cool duo from Madison, Wisconsin USA comprising Zavier Krall and Joseph Taylor.I am highly delighted to release this wonderful recording on Reverb Worship which the guys have entitled "Bore Upon The Breath Of Dawn".
I asked Zavier to describe the music and ideas behind the Rain Drinkers. This is what he came up with : "Before attempting to achieve a certain affect via sound, we discuss the visual impact of particular memories and/or childhood dreams that have greatly influenced our lives. We like to think of the sounds that emanate as channeled, rather than performed. As Raindrinkers, each song/experience is significant in its own right, but also progresses towards some kind of distant finality. We welcome that finality with open arms. We hope that our recordings will document this process, as well as evoke equally powerful colors and lucidity in the mind of the listener. The recordings usually include varying combinations of drums and percussion, guitars, vocals, synthesizers, piano, organs, violin, cello, flutes, hand-made electronics, sound sculpture, field recordings, horns, woodwinds, sticks, rocks, stones, angels, and demons. Our music is almost always improvised. We prefer field recording in locations such as barns, caves, or pastures, over recording in a studio".The title track from the album was actually recorded at the crack of dawn.
"Bore Upon The Breath Of Dawn" contains six lovely tracks. The cover has been designed and photographed by Danielle Dahlke who is a tremendous artist who was commisioned by Zavier and Joseph specifically. The image on the cover is of the guys wading in a spring fed, blessing stream, taken just outside of Black Earth, Wisconsin.
The cd is available now in a numbered edition of 50 copies. It has a oversized cover in a resealable polythene packet.
