This is an interesting one. I'm not sure if we've stocked a record by a school before? Aside from St Winifreds School Choir of course. Ah them were the days. Roll forward 30 years to the Preslav Literary School in Berlin who have created an album of live recordings of a tape-loop orchestra which features contributions from Posset, Machinefabriek, Poldr and other people who took part. The packaging is cool.... it's an LP packaged as a cassette with a screen printed plastic sleeve, you get an essay inside to further your knowledge of the whole project and there's a bonus download of the album plus an entire set by Machinefabriek. Yikes! The music is pretty cool though. The idea was to get a bunch of folks to make tape loops from cassettes and then the school folks played them live and manipulated in front of an audience comprising entirely of people. It's pretty insane stuff though. I've no idea what on earth it sounds like but it's been on for 20 minutes and the variety of sounds and noises on offer are nothing but interesting. One of the craziest things I've heard in ages and yet it's completely compelling. Champion!
NO-FI will release 'Echolalia' on October 18th 2010 as a deluxe 12” vinyl package
The album is a live recording of a tape-loop orchestra led by Berlin-based artist Preslav Literary School and features contributions from Machinefabriek, Posset, Poldr and many others.
The album comes in a deluxe design realised by Newcastle-based designers Supanaught with a booklet containing an essay by Tom Recchion of Los Angeles Free Music Society.
Preslav Literary School held two days of workshops on making tape-loops from compact cassettes in December 2009 at Star & Shadow Cinema, Newcastle-upon-Tyne. Participants then worked with the new archive of loops in front of a live audience in a performance involving multiple playback machines, mixers, real tape delays and live cassette manipulation.
Recalling the sounds of Faust, Popol Vuh, The Skaters and Broadcast, the album draws on the energy of other decades and scenes as diverse as US underground noise, German krautrock and French musique concrète. At times melodic and blissful, at others dark and cut-up, the album seems to move beyond its constituent parts and methodology to reach something haunting and engaging. The album was mixed and mastered as it was played live, with no extra overdubs, by the cult Berlin dubstep producer Lord Cry Cry (Blunt Force Trauma).
The vinyl, whose packaging is based on vintage cassette design features commissioned artwork from Supanaught and photography from Marion Auburtin with a free digital download of all material, plus a bonus, exclusive Machinefabriek solo tape set from the same performance.
Echolalia is released in an edition of just 500 copies

Is this a sarcastic article? Preslav is Adam Thomas alonekamikaze said:
I haven't come across a lot of tape loop orchestras to be honest, so this was a lovely surprise when it came out. I'd forgotten all about it but remembered about this whilst watching that there Black Swan last night, and have had it on a couple of times this morning already - not sure exactly what point of the film reminded me of it, but this should give an indication of the 'vibe' of the tracks on offer here - proper dark shit. Seriously impressive work though, at times recalling the likes of Guiseppe Ielasi or Dem Hunger, though the variety of sounds and samples on display here conjure a million different things, and you'll find yourself transported to many times and places in history you never knew you might end up before you dropped that needle. I'm surprised there are still copies of this in the shop, it's nothing short of spectacular. 5/5
