Our single of the week (19th November 2010)

I'm totally regret not picking up a copy of 'Everything Is Working'. The cover was so alluring and the tracks were totally rad odes to the best of 80s synth pop all reworked tastefully for the kids of 2010. What was I thinking!!! Luckily long time collaborators and tight bro's Joel Ford and Daniel Lopatin (of Oneohtrix Point Never) return with a new 12" featuring four newies and a couple of remixes, one courtesy of Gatekeeper, the other by the band. What can I say about Games? For one they capitalise and crush all the competition when it comes to this synth dominant form of electro pop. Toro Y Moi, Memory Tapes, Small Black and the like ain't got shit on Games. These guys have got all the bases covered sounding like every cool movie soundtrack, video game, half remembered 80s pop-rock hit and awesome kids cartoon theme tune all rolled into one beautiful party jam. It sounds like classic Madonna-era pop souped up for the future of all futures. The synths are mind blowing, the vocals are ridiculously fun and those awesome drum machines keep that party loose and lively. All the originals here are outstanding! These compositions may stink of nostalgia to a certain degree but they also hint at the possibilities of a bright future for electronic pop as they take classic (and criminally underrated) equipment like the Kawai R-100 drum machine and the Roland D-550 synth and reinvent them for a new generation of listeners. To my ears this stuff sounds alarmingly fresh and totally fun. The remixes kick ass too. Get involved.
Established in 1994, Games is a 4LYFE partnership between best friends. "We met in a 6th grade science class and drew tape covers of fake bands that we dreamed we were in together. In high school we started jamming double synthesizers in Dan's basement. This is when we were burning a lot, headbanging to 70s jazz-fusion, dubbing 88.9 blazer mixtapes and jamming them in cars ALL NITE while parsing the landscape data brain //NORTH WAYLAND STYLE" Follow up to the critically acclaimed 'Everything Is Working' 7" single, this six track heavy 12" features LAUREL HALO and also a remix from 'Gatekeeper'. “it’s beautiful and rich with ambient texture… a soft heartbeat pulsing underneath that recalls the late hip-hop producer Jay Dee” New York Times.
