Mukuba Special / Rubaczech by Shackleton vs. Kasai Allstars / Burnt Friedman vs. Konono No. 1

This is almost certainly gonna be good. Shackleton and Burnt Friedman have a crack at remixing music by Kasai Allstars and Konono No. 1, artists that have produced recordings as part of Belgian producer Vincent Kenis's ongoing Congotronics project. Both Konono No. 1 and Kasai Allstars are blessed with fascinating musical backgrounds that are warrant further investigation (though, I'll stick to the tracks in hand for today) and obviously Shackleton and Burnt Friedman are talented lads too so it's no surprise to me that this is a killer remix 12". It was only a matter of time before the modern electronic superstars of the western world would get there grubby mitts on these master tapes so I'm relived to see they've fallen into safe hands. Shackleton gets with a serious sampling regime, bringing all these little bits and pieces together to form a multi-layered behemoth of an afro-jam that is both expansive and hypnotic in delivery. It's Burnt Friedman's 'Rubaczech' mix that works best for me. Konono's source material is so rhythmically instinctive and multi-textured all it takes is to sample wisely, chuck some sweet beats over the top then sit back and enjoy the results. This one really shuffles and I fucking love it.
