Armed with an 8 track and a DA88, Charles and myself set up in my bedroom at my folks' house. We recorded in five days, mixed in two. The approach was loose and spontaneous. Our only desire was to make a soundtrack for our friends.
We played all the instruments together and designed six LO FI BEDROOM ROCK tracks that were basically made around accidents of discovery. That’s where the name came from. Two initials and an accident. The only other musician to play with us was Jimmy Shaw on trumpet.
When Captured Anthems was done we burnt 100 copies, handed most out to our friends and placed 20 in a local record shop. That was it.
In 1998 we took a few months and made Anthems for the Could’ve Bin Pills. The difference in this album was it gave us a chance to work with more people. Charlie was working and touring with DO MAKE SAY THINK. We set up in his living room where he lived with Do Make's Justin Small and James Payment. They ended up playing on the record. IS AND OF THE is a tribute to them.
Others included Jimmy Shaw, Evan Cranley, Jason Collett, and Justin Peroff. Emily Haines sang a duet with me on my first vocal recording. We sent her voice through a stack of peddles which became the approach we took in ANTHEMS FOR A SEVENTEEN YEAR OLD GIRL.
Making anthems was our mission and this carried on to Broken Social Scene. These players all went on to join BSS and this record was the beginning of that collaboration.
The second track off YOU FORGOT IT IN PEOPLE was titled “KC ACCIDENTAL” because we wanted to reveal that these records played a big part in forming BROKEN SOCIAL SCENE.
•KC Accidental is the seminal bedroom project from Kevin Drew and Charles Spearin
•These lo-fi instrumental tracks formed the foundation of Broken Social Scene
•Long out of print and never before available in the United States
