Dollboy has previously released stuff on Static Caravan etc. Sone Institute had a well received CD out Front and Follow that garnered praise by The Times no less. Here the two artists collaborate with each other, sending tapes back and forward to each other. Actually probably not tapes, sound waves more likely. The result is a patchwork of sounds using cut up acoustic guitar, keyboards and other home spun instruments, as if the sounds have been chopped up, thrown in the air and left to settle in their (un) natural position. Its not a melodic, tuneful mish mash but it has a very endearing homely charm which will appeal to fans of Jim O' Rourke's more cut up bits, Fennesz etc.
Dollboy is Oliver Cherer and Sone Institute is Roman Bezdyk. The Sum and the Difference is a collection of instrumental pieces and fragmented songs. This release is a home spun collection of hazy acoustic tunes and electronic interventions. Existing material from each artist was swapped, reworked / re-imagined by the other to create a collection of miniatures. It has has been designed to flow as one 17 minute piece while retaining the individual character of each of the seven songs. This is the sum of our work together and the difference between what we do. Praise for Dollboy… "had us imagining an electro marriage of wonder comprising of the pairing of ISAN and fortdax. Essential of course as though you needed telling." - Losing Today "If the Tardis spat Edward Elgar out into a Shropshire glade with a Roland DX7, a guitar and no direction home, you suspect that the results would not be dissimilar" - Peter Paphides, The Times Praise for Sone Institute… "A minor classic of British electronic music"- The Wire, May 2010. "Delightfully Strange" - Gideon Coe, BBC Music 6 "Sone Institute will effortlessly brighten your darkest day" - The Quietus "This is a truly inspirational piece of art and I'm not sure I've enjoyed anyone's inventiveness as much as this since I first heard Brian Eno's 'Another Green World" - Terrascope
