Raymond Scott Woolson - Broken Things Mended

Broken Things Mended by Raymond Scott Woolson

4...according to our on Thu 30 Sep, 2010.

R. Woolson has been crafting enchanted shoegaze dream-pop for as long as some folks have been alive. Here we have 'Broken Things Mended', a record that's been five years in the making and showcase's Woolson's talent for breezy, ethereal soundscapes and his ability to layer guitar over guitar over guitar until you feel immersed in a ocean of lilting six strings. Everything presented here is ultra positive and full of optimism, there's not a bleak riff in sight which is helping lift my spirits on this particularly wet September afternoon. It feels like a dose of vitamin D injected direct into the ear drum. This is music you're gonna be pretty familiar with done in a way that you'll be more than familiar with but it's done very well and with an attention to detail that is hard to dismiss. If you like all that 90's shoegaze and 4AD stuff then they'll be plenty to keep you amused here.

Raymond Scott Woolson  has been creating guitar-driven ethereal music since the 1990’s.  “Broken Things Mended” is his fifth full-length album of celestial shoegaze soundscapes.  Several years in the making, this release continues Woolson’s exploration of soaring guitar epics and pastoral mood pieces.  Previous albums “The View From Boggins Heights” and “Accidental Grace Notes” received glowing reviews from publications such as Losing Today and The Big Takeover.

A fair amount of variety went into the mix of “Broken Things Mended”.  Here a shimmer of dreampop, there a buzz of psychedelia.  A brush of piano, a burst of drums, and on several occasions a very commendable imitation of a string orchestra.  Those in fact are guitars.  This album is an ocean of guitar.

A passing touch of melancholy, a brief wistfulness, but no gloom or doom.  Woolson will not add to the burden of darkness in the world.  His is the music of light and love, of faith and hope.  The songs on this album look forward and upward.  Victories are won, promises are kept, and broken things are mended.
