Denis Jones - Red + Yellow =

Red + Yellow = by Denis Jones

"Red + Yellow =" is the new album from Manchester-based improvisational musician Denis Jones. With this, his second album, Denis has at last managed to capture the intensity of his live performances in a studio environment, working with various engineers and finalising the recording and mixing at Airtight Studios with Tom Knott (The Earlies).

"Red + Yellow =" features contributions from some of Manchester’s finest musicians, including Luke Flowers (Cinematic Orchestra, Corinne Bailey-Rae), Paddy Steer (Homelife); trumpet player, band-leader and Gondwana Records label boss Matt Halsall; Jon Thorne (Lamb, Lou Rhodes) and Aidan Smith, but for the most part, it features Denis himself on guitar, piano, organ, percussion, vocals, beat-boxing and electronics.

Denis began his musical life as a singer-songwriter in the classic UK mould of the likes of John Martyn; over the last three years he has developed a show-stopping live performance based around the core of his exceptional, unique guitar-playing style and rich, soulful voice. Utilising a loop station and all manner of samplers and effects, Denis creates vast, complex orchestrations of beat-box rhythms, multi-layered vocals and other-worldly sounds which veer from subtle heart-wrenching folk and blues to heavy bass-driven electronica.

“scuzzy Mancunian blues at its richest and, most intriguing.” The Guardian

“logical, eardrum-massaging, heart-stirring sonic harmony” Drowned In Sound

“There’s something about his willingness to experiment, his bravery and risk-taking that makes him stand slightly aside from the now dissolving world of folktronica” Boomkat
