Hype Williams - Do Roids And Kill E'rything

This shadowy duo are back, following the spot-on Wire LP review that came out just as everyone was selling out of their last copies. Great when you can't buy a record that's just had such a sweet write-up ain't it? Well, you can at least buy this new 7" which is probably even better than the album. I'm not just saying that, this 3 track oddity is quite the strangest thing. Opening with one of those drunken tin-pot electro-grime sounding numbers; topped with a beautifully stoned, wise rap - whilst much implicit wonkiness & wavering synth action weaves aural patterns dreamily beneath. The other tune on S1 carries an alarmingly sluggish & creepy low-end & a static/sandpapery rustle before a mogadon RnB beat clatters away and the most leaden, demonic vocal slurs it's way across the surface. The way these folks piss around with tempos is quite inspiring. The longer full sided number on the flip (coming as an unexpected highlight of one truly special 7"!) is a surprisingly gorgeous & hazy tune based around a refrain from 'The Sweetest Taboo' by Sade. It sure ain't coffee table, this one, however! The crackly, ghostly vocal line is totally soulful; the beats coming atcha as a satisfyingly sparse & gentle clatter & then there's huggins of those woozy, blurred synths that we're all in love with at the moment (and probably forever!) An absolute blinder of drowsy left-field pop genius, this is. Ant also tells me how he's reminded of the Legendary Houston DJ Screw in that this music employs that "languid, eerie quality" and slowed down rhythm. They were all dopin' up on cough medicine though. What's OUR excuse?

I have already attempted to write this review once. That was after the first time I listened to this EP. You can guess what sort of state I was in. Suuuuuuuuuuper stooooooooned jams on the flip, sort of like that Get Choong track but not. Mellow. Side A... I'm not entirely sure about. While the second track is okay, the first sort of put me off this side. But that's only one track, and I've only listened to the thing one and a half times. I would recommend this EP on the basis of Side B alone, let alone the second track of Side A. Well worth that 4 quid you would otherwise put towards a tenbud.
