Robert/Gilad/Ros are the other names, in case ye be wondrin'. Plus there's the Sigamos String Quartet who deserve a mention for their involvement. I reckon it's JUST ABOUT possible that you might recognise a title or two from this set which includes takes on 'Round Midnight', 'What a Wonderful World', 'In a Sentimental Mood', 'Lush Life' and many others, including Robert Wyatt's own 'Maryan' and Chic's 'At Last I Am Free'. All done in the most lush and tasteful of styles, but personally I could stand to lose the sax tone and those who've never managed to get past big Bob's idiosyncratic vocal style probably aren't about to start now so it's only fair to mention that he spends a lot of time representing on the mic.. Personally I like his style but that's just me. The initial batch of the CD version comes with a 'making of' DVD so if you want to score one of those try not to dally too long!
· ‘For The Ghosts Within’ is a new collaboration between
Robert Wyatt, saxophonist / composer Gilad Atzmon and
violinist / composer Ros Stephen.
· A song cycle featuring jazz standards such as ‘Lush Life’,
‘In A Sentimental Mood’ and ‘Round Midnight’, ‘For The
Ghosts Within’ places Wyatt’s voice (and whistling) amid
the seductive drama of string quartet and Gilad’s beautiful
saxophone playing.
· The trio also take on Robert’s own song – the classic
‘Maryan’ from his 1997 album ‘Schleep’, Chic’s ‘At Last I
Am Free’ and, a future Xmas number one, Louis
Armstrong’s ‘What A Wonderful World.’
· After Robert was nominated for The Mercury Prize
previously for ‘Cuckooland’ perhaps this beautiful trio
record will finally make it for next year’s award.
· Gilad Atzmon is a respected artiste in his own right, he has
various successful groups and is currently a main player in
Ian Dury’s Blockheads.
· There will be an initial run of 1000 special CD/DVD
editions, the DVD features a bonus 30 minute
documentary on the making of the album (sold out).
· The vinyl is a double with music split over 3 sides.
