This single by Anna Calvi is more pompous than a thousand Muse live shows. Its something that one might hear if you were riding into Transylvania on horseback in a Hammer Horror film. Massive bellowing voice. A voice that would rouse the damned undead from their ancient slumber. I guess that's the main selling point. Its all about the voice. The music isn't too bad, its kind of epic sounding, and ticks all the boxes...boxes that have been made from Florence and The Machines best selling pamphlet "The primal drum beat and how to rip off Kate Bush". For all its gothic leanings its pretty safe...nice one Domino!!!!

· Originally written by Wayne Shanklin and
performed by Frankie Laine in the early 50’s,
‘Jezebel’ was famously covered in French by the
chanteuse Edith Piaf. Anna Calvi’s reworking of the
classic is full of passion, emotion and startling
beauty - Anna succeeds in thoroughly making
‘Jezebel’ her own.
· ‘Moulinette’, written by Anna with her drummer
Daniel Maiden-Wood, showcases her powerful
voice, her mastery of the electric guitar as well as
her unique blend of dark, atmospheric and
romantic pop, to full effect.
· Anna Calvi has just been confirmed as support to
Grinderman on their European tour, in addition to
a handful of headline UK dates with the help of
Mally Harpaz on harmonium / percussion / guitar
and Daniel on drums.
