I have a bit of a soft spot for The Bees - their last album had some lovely summer tunes. To the uninitiated they are a bit like The Coral I suppose, strummy laid back guitar pop with the odd nod to The La's. This new single is a bit lacking though. Its like Ray Montagne or someone. Gravel voiced, yearning vocals. The lack of a tune disguised by repeating the title over and over. You are not fooling me, lads. The B-side nicks the High Llamas organ sound. Its a funky, easy listening style instrumental that does have the odd Bacharach nod but could also be used as call centre hold music.
The first single from The Bees forthcoming studio album 'Every Step’s A Yes' will be 'I Really Need Love', out 4 October on Fiction, a stunning, uplifting song built on the push and pull between two really simple chords. It is the result, says Aaron Fletcher, of an attempt to write a “universal song, something everyone could grab hold of,” and even by that bar-raising measure, it can be considered an unqualified success.
