Ethiopian composer Mulatu Astatke is a giant in African music, and the inventor of Ethio-Jazz. His work has inspired many
imitations, many admirers, and in recent years a whole new generation of fans. His music veers from sublime tezetas to the
most foot stomping funk. The award winning and invaluable ‘Ethiopiques’ series has shed light on a vital and amazing music
scene that existed in the Addis Ababa region in the 60s. The foremost composter and arranger of that era was Mulatu Astatke.
On February 1st 2009 he blessed the sold out Luckmann Theatre in Los Angeles with an amazing show. He shared the stage
with a full orchestra, including veterans of the LA jazz and beats scenes such as Bennie Maupin, Azar Lawrence, Phil Ranelin,
and Miguel Atwood-Ferguson. Their performance is beautiful, showcasing many Mulatu classics as well as some new material.
Nas, Damien Marley, Cut Chemist, Quantic, and Madlib have all felt the influence of Ethio-Jazz – this special edition double
vinyl set honours Mulatu and his music. Part one of a three part series accompanying the full length ‘Timeless’ 3DVD, packaged
in a luxurious five-colour gatefold jacket, printed on brown chip board, with extensive liner notes and interview. “Musically,
Mulatu has been my biggest inspiration” – Cut Chemist … “One of the musical visionaries of our age… we are still trying to
catch up.” – Quantic.
