Infinite Love by Dustin Wong

OK, first up...the factual info. Dustin Wong is a genius guitar player from Baltimore who keeps himself busy by playing with ponytail and Ecstatic Sunshine, two absolutely sweet bands. This is his debut solo record and it's a fairly complicated little feller. It's two compositions spread over two discs each beginning in the same way before going on their own separate journeys. It's up to the listener to decide the path (in this case I'm taking the first path as I'm not permitted the time to listen to both discs) that are entitled 'Brother' and 'Sister' which ties into the concept nicely. The album also comes with a DVD of Dustin performing the track live of which a portion can be seen here. Now, I love this guys guitar playing and could happily listen to him forever. There's a bunch of inventive things going on and it's amazing to hear such virtuosity and creative flair in the same sit in. On top of that it's all perform in pretty much real time with only a guitar and a selection of pedals to guide Dustin on his path. Not easy to pin down or compare to anything already out there but imagine a mix of Mark McGuire's solo stuff and Ponytail and you won't be far off the mark. I love the fact that he wrote this after tripping balls on a bunch of mushrooms. Good lad.

· Dustin Wong was a founding member of the Baltimore
bands Ponytail and Ecstatic Sunshine.

· For ‘Infinite Love’ (a reference to a psychedelic experience
of Dustin’s), he wanted to focus on the potential of an
actual album and the journey from beginning to end. This
journey or musical process is increasingly being lost in the
digital era, where often the focus is on tracks or collections
of tracks. To highlight that journey, ‘Infinite Love’ is
presented as a double album, each with the same opening
and different paths to the final codas. It is the listener’s
choice which path to take. Dustin puts it thus: “In ‘Infinite
Love’ the listener gets two choices. I think of them as
twins, a brother and a sister, living their lives, then
reuniting”.

· ‘Infinite Love’ is one single 40 minute track, presented in
two different versions (‘Brother’ and ‘Sister’) each starting
the same, but taking a different path to the end.

· The CD version contains 2CDs and a DVD in a 6 panel fold
out package. The DVD features a film to accompany the
music, playable with either ‘Brother’ or ‘Sister’ audio.

· The LP version contains 2LPs and the DVD presented in a
gatefold jacket with a download coupon. Side A starts

‘Infinite Love’ off. Side B and side C are the alternate endings (‘Brother’ or ‘Sister’). Side D is an exclusive bonusEP, ‘Indigo And Crystal’.

· “A cathartic, psychedelic journey into the deepest parts of
Dustin Wong’s mind” – Impose.
