Who is David Barnard? He's apparently a reclusive chap from Wiltshire but once again, the Rephlex mystery trail deepens with the usual dickhead bloggers having fits as to whether this is actually RDJ. It's sounding less like him than some of the J.K. tunes also out this week. The opening tune 'F-Tron' is a smart cosmic house/disco thing that maybe has a kind of similar vibe to the less hectic & tech-y Tuss material. Then he treats us to a whizzy, euphoric, breaking electro choon which is proper boss. Over to t' other side, 'Syphonivc Flash' is a whipcrack slice of classic Braindance & probably the most Analord/Tuss-esque, with loads of gurgling, burbling hyper-melodies & searching, eerie synths. It's also quite similar to bits of the Wisp catalogue too and is undeniably set up to become an exemplary piece of Rephlex history. Moving into airier, sparser waters, the closing track 'Livingtones' is a dreamy mid-paced roller with some itchy breaks & a vast amount of intricate, beautiful detail. He's playing on the forthcoming Rephlex tour so if he ain't got long ginger hair your rumour mongering is redundant, yo. Which Rephlex 12" do we put in the recommendations because they're BOTH amazing?

* Widely heralded on messageboards as one of the best electronic/dance records of the year. Also rumoured
(incorrectly, as so often the case with Rephlex releases) to be the work of Mr. A. Twin, probably due to it’s clean production and clever programming and extraordinary marriage of central music themes; melody, harmony, rhythm etc.

* Monolith’s work has been one of the hottest downloads from the exclusive & independent Rephlex online shop.
Whether it is the irresistible disco house anthem of ‘F-Tron’, the catchy electro of ‘Vigton’, the storming braindance of
‘Syphonivc Flash’ or the stripped down dubby ‘Livingtones’, this EP is bound to entertain across the board, having been
tried and tested on dubplate at countless gigs. Monolith is part of the current Rephlex 19th birthday European Tour, in a city near you right now.

* Monolith aka David Paul Barnard lives in the Wiltshire countryside: “My musical interest developed at an early age.

These interests later progressed to Djing with cassette decks and over dubbing sounds which was my first attempt at music production. I follow an analogue methodology and aesthetic, married with the use of digital technologies. I make the music I want to hear. I enjoy it more than any other music, this drives me to make more. My ambition is to make my next best track. If I like something, it inspires me. The strongest elements of my tracks often have a disjointed pop sensibility, this is something I aim for.”

Really great 4 tracker from rephlex. With the aritst RDJ/TUSS/ALESKI/DMX/ on the roster this record fits right in. Hopefully they continue bringing this sound to the masses!

Rating: 5 out of 5
