Our album of the week (8th October 2010)
...according to our Clinton on Thu 07 Oct, 2010.
There's barely a bad record out this week. How are you going to pay for it all? Credit Card is the answer. Buy now - worry later. You'll want this one too, its chirruping, pointy acoustic guitar meanderings, clangy percussion, homespun but fantastic melodies - this aint half as ambient as I was expecting from its sleeve and the opening bars. Nylon plucked acoustic guitar rattle, evocative wandering vocals and ambient interference - in fact this sits somewhere in a magical place between Jose Gonzales, Boards of Canada and Fennesz where wistful songwriting meets evocative warped 70's Polaroid nostalgia meets scratchy bedroom electronic noises. Absolutely top notch recommended. No messing. I'm giving it a 5.
* THE WIRE: "Pioulard's work is a remarkably effortless cohabitation between bedroom electronics and wistful
songwriting."
* Lasted is the third album by Thomas Meluch under the alias Benoit Pioulard.
* Thomas has toured throughout North America and Europe since his last record, the process of which has had a marked impact on the development of these songs as lyrics and structures have been scrapped, tweaked and reworked in the live setting. As with previous albums it was recorded and mixed in domestic isolation, this time throughout the rainy season in his current home of Portland, Oregon.
* While the extent of the dreary climate's influence on the results is left to the listener's discretion, what is certain is that
Thomas has a preternatural ability to weave disparate sound components into a cohesive sonic tapestry, mixing a varied
palette of field recordings and percussive elements along with melancholy melodies to create songs that recall - and are
akin to - vespers of long-buried memories.
* Released on CD and 140g black LP.
* For Fans Of: Beach House, The Dead Texan,Fennesz, Four Tet, Boards of Canada.
