We had summat in by these guys ages ago and I completely forgot of their existence till this new album popped along. In case you didn't know it's Jose Gonzalez and friends (well I presume they're friends). In fact to be precise it's Jose, Elias Array and Tobias Winterkorn. If you get to hear this record you'll immediately say is that Jose Gonzalez? His voice is so familiar sounding and distinctive that you can't miss it. It's like a massive juggernaut of niceness driving towards your ears kinda leisurely. Here Jose's sound is fleshed out and and it's a lot more rocky than his solo wares. It's all very tasteful as well and in between all the respectability there's the odd adventurous moment where something will be a little louder than normal or you'll hear a noise you weren't expecting but overall it's pretty safe ground. It's pretty good as well. The songs are well crafted and the sound is sweet!
JUNIP originally formed in Gothenburg, Sweden, ten years ago by José González (guitar, vocals), Elias Araya (drums) and Tobias Winterkorn (organ/moog). Junip have periodically gathered together and recorded when schedules permitted, but this is the first time all the members have focused exclusively on the band. Their sound will be familiar to those who have listened to González’s acclaimed records, but added to the mix on top of his nylon stringed guitar and distinctive voice are organs, analogue synths and drums. The influences are diverse and wide-ranging, from Neu! to Shuggie Otis and John Martyn, while the place to which it takes you is one of pastoral contemplation, hazy summer memories and autumnal grace…
