The A-side here is a distorted drum machine led track with a sort of slow motion 80's noir/goth vibe. Totally in the dark zone until a heavenly synth makes an appearance, lifting the track up into realms of sublime beauty. Phil is reminded of some Xiu Xiu stuff whereas Brett draws similarities with 'The Cedar Room' by Doves. The flip is a short tune called traumatic visions and again is way in the dark zone with smothered guitars and bleak lyrics, yet it remains melodic, as does 'Gouge Your Eyes' for that matter. It appears goth is well and truly back! Oh I forgot to mention that this is their debut single.
SKROT UP is excited to announce the release of Grave Babies’ debut 7". The single contains the songs Gouge Your Eyes Out (4:05 min) and Traumatic Visions (2:00 min). It is pressed in an edition of 300 copies and comes with full-color jacket and insert.
For their debut 7”, Grave Babies have come up with an anthemic and starkly macabre onslaught of chilling drum machine beats, reverb-buried guitar riffs, and synth-vamping, over which they chant about fear, loathing and suicide, like medieval monks from a long disavowed
heretic sect. Sounding like they were deep in the throes of romantic love with morbidity, death and corruption, their songs are served cold, yet melodic, and with a convincing odor of isolated detachment.
The Seattle band deliver the languidly brutal message that no matter how bad your day was, the night promises to be unimaginably worse. Claustrophobic in the way that all the best Goth bands were claustrophobic, you can still conceivably hum the melody line.
Grave Babies’ bio includes a 32-minutes cassette on Skrot Up entitled Death Face, and local shows in, and around Seattle, where the band lives. Grave Babies also played at the NME showcase at SXSW in Austin, Texas 2010, and they just did a short West Coast stint where
they performed with Weekend and Young Prisms, amongst others.
Record release party was held on Saturday June 12th with King Dude, Championship Belt, Gape Attack, and Prison also performing.
