YUUH LIKE, UH, FUCKED UUUUUP! I'm sure you're probably all quite aware of how prog-punkers Fucked Up aren't anything like as boneheaded as they might appear given their moniker. They're here to prove it again with the latest in this 'Year of the..' series of releases which boasts just the two songs for all its minutes, which number twenty-five, near enough. After softening the fair listener up with a little string intro the title track swiftly morphs into a fairly relentlessly shit-kickin' storm of controlled aggression which I very much doubt will disappoint anyone who's enjoyed anything of their previous work. Apparently 'Solomon's Song' is something to do with those Twilight films that the young folks seem to like and it chucks a five-minute sax solo into the mix in pure 'shouldn't work, but totally does' style. I feel I should note that the bass on both of these tracks is immensely satisfying. A minute ago I typed 'fucked ox' into our search engine.. Don't try that shit with Google Images at home, kids.
Fucked Up release the next 12" in their 'Chinese
Zodiac' series.
Released on Merge in North America and Matador
everywhere else, 'Year Of The Ox' continues the
trend of these releases and clocks in at 13 minutes
long.
It also features guest appearances from Nika Roza
Danilova (Zola Jesus) and Toronto string quartet New
Strings Old Puppets.
The 12" also features a 12-minute B-side called
'Solomon's Song', which apparently is "a gothic
vampire love tribute to Twilight”.
It features a five-minute saxophone solo from the
Bitters' Aerin Fogel and, as Pitchfork said: “Name
another punk band ballsy enough to try something like
that”.
