Tokimonsta - Midnight Menu

Midnight Menu by Tokimonsta

Tokimonsta is the work of Bay Area producer Jennifer Lee with this being the first pressing of her debut album 'Midnight Menu'. Lee counts as one of the only female producers making music of this nature in her field and is notable as the first female artist enlisted into L.A's Brainfeeder crew. Her music uses the basis of hip-hop (most obviously beat sampling) to create vast, genre hopping style that encompasses elements of soul, R&B, avant-garde jazz, funk, dub, acid jazz, experimental electronica and psychedelic rock. You could easily place this in the field of experimental hip-hop i would associate with producers like Madlib and the Stones Throw label (sans the MC's) but in many ways it has more in common with the trip-hop/Ninja Tune/mid-nineties Bristol scene. It's lush and adventurous in tone and draws influences from all over to form a homage to laid back flavours and lazy nights smoking massive boffs. It's an almost dream-like affair that drifts in to the psyche slowly but surely. Totally chilled business this.

Limited-pressing 11 track vinyl version of Tokimonsta’s mind-expanding debut album. Born and raised in the South Bay area of Los Angeles, Tokimonsta (Jennifer Lee) was an unfocused pupil of classical piano. However, she has come to use this background to create vast textural soundscapes by utilizing live instruments, percussion, digital manipulation, and dusty vinyl. Her music is rooted in hip hop rhythms fused with classic soul, traditional percussion, avant-garde jazz, experimental electronica, psychedelic rock, and everything in between – so finding one way to describe her style is a fool’s errand. Through the creation of beats, she is able to fuse vintage styles with progressive sounds into something compellingly unique. Though distinctly known as one of only few female producers in her sphere, her music has come to represent itself, free of gender context. Toki has been featured regularly on BBC Radio 1, and turned in one of the standout sets of the weekend at this year’s Sonar festival. Creating genre-bending future music at will, she is also notably the first female active in the LA-based Brainfeeder crew, and took part in the recent London gathering of the prestigious Red Bull Music Academy.
